They arent gay every single source that i just looked at said they arent
I’m surprised you didn’t talk about hip hop managing to stay black despite it having a massively popular white artist
The philosopher you mentioned about the Hermeneutics of Suspicion is Paul Ricoeur. Read him if you ever have a chance.
I remember doing research on finding a way to get diagnosed very early one in my “understanding I’m autistic” journey. The lady said they didn’t test adults because “it would’ve shown up in childhood already” and after a few back and forths establishing that autism just does go away when you’re 18 (cut off age for testing) and me clearly being frustrated, I said “so what about the kids who are now adults that had parents who neglected them, never got taken to the doctor, and they never had the opportunity to get tested? They just suffer?” And the lady just said “yeah. They do” just to shut me up I was so angry, I stopped looking for a diagnosis for a year.
Oh thank you Hbomberguy for leading me here,
It’s obvious
ive always disliked the "self diagnosed people are taking away resources from actually diagnosed people who need them!" take cause as someone who is diagnosed with adhd and self diagnosed autistic in the good ol' us of a what fucking resources?? and even then if people need help i dont think they should have to jump through the hoops of a diagnosis and face the plenty of shitty doctors out there to get what they need also i just wanna say for everybody out there who happens to read this "subconscious faking" isnt a thing. you have to be aware that youre faking to fake something. its incredibly hard to lie to yourself about things you dont have/do.
I was diagnosed at 22 years old (by the same doctor as you, actually!) and wish I had gotten diagnosed so much sooner. Given that I am high masking and AFAB though, it went undetected and doubted for years. Even my own therapist who I had been seeing for years as a teenager shot the idea down immediately, without even hearing what my reasons for suspecting autism were. I had a friend diagnosed with autism who said I couldn't claim to be autistic unless I was diagnosed, even though we related on almost everything and I had spent years researching by that point and finding support in online communities. Essentially, no one believed me. But after enough explaining, my mom was on my side, especially since she had been working with autistic teens for a few years by that point and saw a lot of similarities in us. She helped me pay the ~$2000 bill for a diagnosis and provided information about my childhood behaviors. Ever since I've been diagnosed, I have been trying to undo years of trauma, internalized ableism, and a horrible self esteem. It's been a slow process but I'm making progress. I'm trying to reframe my perspective of what it means to be a successful person. I was the stereotypical "gifted" kid, a savant when it came to art, got good grades without trying, put in advanced classes, etc. So much expectation was placed on me by teachers and family to become something great, and I internalized it hardcore. I became severely depressed over time and practically non functional by high school because of autistic burnout. I literally became physically ill from how hard I was pushing myself, all while masking in an attempt to fit in. It was just seen as depression at the time. I tried every antidepressant under the sun, only to have extreme reactions or become even more depressed. A very astute psychologist made the suggestion that I didn't have depression, but some other "mystery" condition that was mimicking it. He didn't diagnose me because I didn't get to see him for a long enough time, but it led me down the path of seeking out an alternative diagnosis. And now I'm here! Still suffering with some depression, mainly from trauma and the woes of being autistic in a world built for neurotypical people, but on a better path. A path to seek accommodations, no longer carry the weight of expectations I can never possibly achieve, and be better understood and accepted by friends and family. And it wouldn't have happened unless I self-diagnosed myself initially, and ignored all the people who doubted me.
watched this video expecting it to be some kinda dunk-fest on ppl discounting self-diagnosis but it turned out to be a gripping dive into social constructs and identitification. 10/10
"It's like poetry: gay" I'm gonna have that in my vocabulary for a while
Hi! Your video essay is really comprehensive and I really enjoyed your analysis. I just wanted to add that one big reason why Taylor Swift spoke to stereotypically feminine, white teenagers was her portrayal as unapologetically soft and girly. I was a teenager in the 2000-2010s and at the time, being girly was communicated as something undesirable and ‘less than’ (like that tumblr-circulated meme with the bimbo who finds a book…or Paris Hilton).
I would love to keep watching, but I fear that I may commit a fallacy if I do. Thank you kindly, Alex, for making a super cool video with an awesome style (and wondrous colour grading), but I simply can't keep watching. This makes me too angry.
"And while we're at it, pigs can fly, hell has frozen over and the Earth is round!" Got me :D
how younger generations use labels, (and esp queer neurodivergent ppl use labels) is so hard to articulate in a way older ppl will understand. I’m choosing which labels to use and what labels to share in every situation. I don’t tell my jobs I’m autistic because that benefit out weighs the possible negative consequences. I use different pronouns in different situations. I use different sexuality labels in different situations. imo labels are tools to use how you see fit.
Bestie, I come with news…
Its not possible to change your sex. You'll never achieve what you have envisioned. They stopped because it was a disaster and they were harming kids. They didn't want to.
i was scared of this video when I first saw it on my recommended, as a self diagnosed person myself, but i am sat to receive the transsexual autism now
I feel like Swift is a capitalist, family-friendly, safe version of Chris Chan that also comes with a soundtrack made by herself
@1:16:40 Heyyyy, I recognise that voice! :D
You had me at gay, horizontal love ~ equality,
I feel like, yes the movie applies to the LGBTQ+, but it’s generally a movie about the fear/disdain for groups of people we don’t understand, and how those barriers are broken. The same message hits if we think it refers to race, culture, religion, sex, gender, sexuality, politics, etc. Any societal divisions that cause groups of people to demonize other groups of people rather than humanize and connect. Yes, the LGBTQ+ angle unquestionably fits, but so do all of the other random labels that we make to justify the creation of outgroups. That’s what I loved so much about this movie, the message is about unity regardless of which self imposed boundary we are referring to. I love that LGBTQ+ representation, definitely see how heavy handed and blatant it is, but it still feels like it plays double duty with ANY societal division.
0:05 "oh no i'm watching a video by a nerd :/ "
Ok, I know I’m probably not in the right space to say this, but this is weird. You are sexualizing a relationship between friends. Guess what? Luca isn’t even in the age of consent yet, he’s 13! if everything has sexual implications this would be an illegal movie, straight or gay. Also assuming someone’s sexuality is exactly what most people who are gay dont like? but it’s ok to say that this random kid is gay even though they didn’t kiss, or stare into each others eyes with explicit intent? I’m going to admit I haven’t finished the video, but I have a life so I don’t want too. Guess what, horror also isn’t explicitly gay. I’m not saying it can’t be or shouldn’t be, but like ITS A GENRE. You are therefore forcing the explicitly straight horror characters to be seen as gay, I know they’re not real but, that’s really weird. Forcing someone to compress their sexuality is exactly what the PRIDE thing is trying to stop, and you’re just doing it to the other side. Heck I can bet a lot of those writers were gay, I don’t know but, guess what they made a gay book or two with horror, THAT DOESN’T MAKE ALL HORROR GAY. So hear me out on this, A large amount of fairy tales are stories of princes saving a princess from a tower or something, this is explicitly straight. Does that make all fairytales straight? No. I’m sorry but this is all really weird, he’s a KID. I know he’s not real but like, this is weird, also describing someone’s un-changeable physical features as gay (the nose an face), and the clothes they wear? Dawg they are in Italy, like 98% of the people there in this movie wear that pants. I may come back to this video and make a shorter response after finishing it, but I just can’t bare this, look in a mirror and review this videos, the basis of them, before submitting them. If you wanna debate I am down. My emails in my bio.
Oh also I forgot to say I support the LGBTQ+ community extremely, almost 90% of my friends are gay and I’m very flamboyant for a man, and I embrace it. I openly fight against homophobia.
1. Sexuality isn't sex. Middle and high schoolers try dating all the time, it may not seem to mean much at the time but it happens. 2. Your point about clothes/features doesn't make sense to me, if Alex mentioned that at all then it was such a minor detail I didn't notice it. (Edit: I finished the video after writing this comment, I think I see what you're talking about. The visual connections to the movie Alex talks about are valid, I think. It's an animated movie, they have every choice over what the characters look like, so it's totally possible that it was intentional.) 3. He talks about allegories a lot throughout this video, and that's what a lot of it comes down to. The queer experience, especially growing up, can be ridiculously complicated and traumatic. So people look to fiction for understanding their experiences and explaining them to others. Are Luca and Alberto in love? Who knows? (For what it's worth a lot of these comments say the director confirmed recently that that was a valid reading - I don't know, I haven't seen the movie). Does Luca's experience mirror that of a gay kid growing up, meeting people like themself, dealing with the ramifications of their identity- according to a lot of people, yes it does! And the connection queer people have to those kinds of stories is worth talking about! And that answers your question about horror too. Of course not all horror is gay, but a lot of us, both as artists and consumers of art, look at weird monsters on the fringes of society and connect with that! So, intentionally or not (and a lot of the time it IS intentional), this shows up a lot in that kind of art.
@pokkiheart you hit um with the “erm actually 🤓👆” you silly goose your wrong
I’m with my boy @laughy13 because he has a point
@@theexplosionmadness9389 ??? We both have pretty detailed arguments, you're the only one being dismissive. OP has a problem with the video, I'm trying to be helpful.
"Is anyone a man?" is similar to when I ask myself "how do I know what sex or gender someone has just by looking at them?"
There's a rumor that eddie was going to get gangbanged instead of Beverley.
In 1980s everyone was openly homophobic. Hollywood wouldn't get on board for decades later (ellen was fired by Disney's Bob iger for being gay). Hollywood blackballed Elizabeth Taylor when she started AIDS charities. Liberals and Democrats wouldnt support the LGBT until 2012. But even they really didnt care. They still don't

15:11 - 15:17 that is so real and 18:12 my favorite movie! And the text is so real💀
Nerd
i really do wish that our brains were different from birth based on our genders. i'm a binary masculine trans man, i don't deviate from the male gender at all and i really wish that there was something in my brain that showed that. something that was exactly the same as any other mans. something proving i am trans. yet realizing that that's just not the case, I've struggled with finding what connects me with manhood in the way that it does. everything that a woman can be, can also be a man, can also be a non-binary person and everything in between. men, in general, don't have any characteristics or interests that women can't have, so why does the idea of me identifying as anything other than a man feel so sickening to me? i tried to see it as a physical problem - i want to start taking T and see all of the changes in my body, so that must be what makes me a man - but that not only excludes a lot of gnc people, but also doesn't satisfy me. i don't like the idea of just taking gender out of the picture entirely. i love being a man and, if suddenly gender stopped existing as a concept, i would lose a crutial part of my identity, but i struggle to understand why. i can't describe what it means or feels like to be a man in words. i can't explain the social construct of gender, even though i somehow subconsciously understand it in its entirety. I'm just a man, inside and out, and even though i wasn't born as anything, there's something inheritely male about me. at least that's how i like to see it to help me sleep at night. is this thing on?
“You can’t be bisexual! You’re twelve!” “And?” Btw: WE DON’T TALK ABOUT BRUNO-

Yesss!!
Drafting up some ideas for my dissertation, and I know I'll be coming back to this video. I've been reflecting a lot on the meaning and power of language, specifically how language and self definition constructs the world around us! I feel the social sciences have moved a bit away from the idea of identity being a fluid and unique experience on an individual basis, we've been so consumed with the idea of defining and limiting "normal human behavior" that we forget people are kind of messy? The brain's just some weird fleshy information processing system after all pfft, easily affected by a multitude of processing errors (like heuristics, or sensory simplifications), and by internal basis and beliefs. Everyone is operating off a schematic, abstract version of the world they create in their head. Also the construction of everyone's brain is unique, heavily influenced by the environment it was produced from as well as the genetic information it was drafted from. So of course we're all a little weird and different. I also keep coming back to Tajfel and Turner's social identity theory (1979 if I remember correctly), something thats similarly being left behind (I have yet to talk with a professor who knows of this shit! Its so annoying I want to talk about it aaaaaaa). They proposed the idea that people have a large identity pool that they draw from to form to the situation around them based of cues, such as situational, the people around them, time of day, location etc. Basically people act differently in different social groups like how you act at church vs how you act at school. Aspects of your personality will shift to match each, you may be more rowdy at school than church. But its all still drawing from a larger identity pool that makes up the individual. Its because these different places ask, whether explicitly or implicitly through things like norms, tradition, rules, different things of us. The social groups we associate and label ourselves with do also affect that larger identity pool though. Thats why I love studying the ideas of intersectionality so much. Thinking of an individual through a singular lens is useful in some aspects, such as in research or through guiding conversation (stuff like talking about how an aspect of an identity affects a person's larger life), but also terribly reductive in another. Especially when we start to use identity as an explanation or purpose, simplifying or stereotyping a person to their base components such as through script/schema we might end up de-individuating them in the process. Your videos are always a great watch, thanks for all the great work!
“ I wasn’t driving because I’m gay” Me five minutes later: wait what?
Genuinely genuinely genuinely the most entertaining and enriching videos I've seen in months. Your production of this and the information you provide is stellar and as someone who's suffering a shit ton of imposter syndrome since delving into the world of self diagnosis as an adult this has given me a bit stronger of a base to feel sure in the results of the 8+ (PhD approved) online tests
“It’s like poetry; gay.” I have never heard something so wise 🙏
This movie is so gay
I can see all of the parallels and reasons for them to be gay, and I get where you're coming from, but the director of Luca, Enrico Casarosa, has stated that the movie is not meant to be gay. There were plans to have it be gay originally, but those were scrapped in favor of focusing on their friendship instead.
Y’know, I just don’t really see it
